Ashland-Greenwood returns to the Class C1 semifinals for the fifth straight year
The AG Bluejays beat the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 65-53, led by three players in double-figures
LINCOLN - For the fifth straight year, the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays are back in the C1 semifinals.
The defending champion Bluejays battled a strong Lincoln Christian Crusader tea, and earned a harfd-fought 65-53 victory.
Lincoln Christian took the early 6-2 lead midway through the first quarter, followed by multiple scores by each side. Ashland-Greenwood got into a rhythm after Cal Kissinger threw down a one-handed dunk, then Logan Fangmeyer knocked in a three. The Crusaders returned a three of their own, thanks to Turner Hohlen.
The offenses continued to heat up through the first quarters final four minutes. Ashland-Greenwood closed out the opening quarter with another Fangmeyer triple.
Trailing 17-12, Lincoln Christian a 6-0 run to start the second quarter to take an 18-17 lead.
Derek Tonjes became the go-to guy for Ashland-Greenwood throughout the final five minutes of the half, scoring 9 points for the Bluejays as the ended the half on a 14-4 run.
Ashland-Greenwood led 31-22 at halftime.
The Bluejays started the second half on a 10-2 run to increase the lead to 17-points. The Crusaders were able to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 9 points in the final minutes of the game. Ashland-Greenwood was able to slam the door by quickly getting the ball up the floor to Cooper Westerhold who threw down a jam in the final 30 seconds.
The Bluejays secured the 65-53 victory over the Crusaders, ending their season.
Ashland-Greenwood had three players in double-figures, headlined by Derek Tonjes' 19 points and 7 rebounds. Cooper Westerhold scored 18 points while Cal Kissinger added 14.
Lincoln Christian had three players tie for the team high in scoring, with each Grant Dehaan, Turner Hohlen and Cooper Torell scoring 9 points.
The Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays secure a spot in the Class C1 semifinals, awaiting the winner of #3 Auburn and #6 Gothenburg.
